Consuming the OPC Web Client Web Service with Internet Explorer

By utlizing the OPC Web Client Web Service you can create a web-page that does not require an ActiveX control which greatly reduces the complexity of development and even more so, reduces the stress of the deployment of CAB files and security policies etc.

Your web-page scripts can simply send read/write instructions (via XML) to the OPC Web Client Web Service.

Because the transport is generic (HTTP) and the packets are firewall-friendly XML packets your IT department will be happy because they will not need to decrease their security.

Benefits at a glance

  • Processing occurs within the browser and Web Service, and not on web-server itself.
  • Web page can be downloaded to any Internet Explorer (version 5.5 or newer) anywhere *
  • Each web-browser communicates to the OPC Server via the Web Service, using firewall-friendly XML packets over Port 80 (HTTP) eliminating the need for DCOM.

* OPC connections between a client and server are managed by COM or DCOM (if client and server are on different computers). You will need to configure your DCOM security settings appropriately to allow remote communications to work correctly.
